In the 1960s, copper was widely used as an electrode material, with a usage rate of about 90%, and graphite was only about 10%; In the 21st century, more and more users are choosing graphite as electrode material. In Europe and America, over 90% of electrode materials are graphite.
The application advantages of graphite electrodes
Faster processing speed
Under normal circumstances, the milling speed of graphite can be 2-3 times faster than that of copper; The discharge speed is also faster than copper because graphite can use a relatively large current at the same spark position; Because it can be bundled into composite electrodes, it reduces the number of electrodes and processing time.
More flexible material costs
It is possible to choose different grades of graphite (coarse or fine particles) for various processing situations, and due to the design of composite electrodes, the number of electrodes is reduced, resulting in lower costs.
Will not deform
The softening point of copper is around 1000 degrees, which is prone to deformation due to heating; The sublimation temperature of graphite is 3650 degrees; It has excellent thermal stability, with a thermal expansion coefficient of only 1/30 of copper, making it more stable in discharge machining.
Lighter weight
The density of graphite is only 1/4 of copper, and when using large electrodes for discharge machining, it can effectively reduce the burden on machine tools (EDM); More suitable for application on large molds.
Easier to polish
Due to the cutting resistance of graphite being only 1/5 of copper, it is easier to perform manual polishing.
No burrs
After processing, copper electrodes still need to be manually trimmed to remove burrs, while graphite processing does not have burrs, saving a lot of costs and making it easier to achieve automated production.
